These are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Income Tax<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>National Insurance (Class 2 &amp; Class 4)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Student Loan Repayments (government loans via The Student Loan Company)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Important note:<\/strong> I am basing the all of the following workings on Self-Employed profits (income after Allowable Expenses) of <strong>UNDER \u00a350,270<\/strong>. If you are earning more that that, you&#8217;ll also have to pay Higher Rate Income Tax (on profits from \u00a350,271 to \u00a3125,140) and\/or Additional Rate Income Tax (on profits over \u00a3125,140).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Income Tax<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For all income (PAYE income + self-employed profits) you receive above your tax-free Personal Allowance, you\u2019ll be liable to pay <strong>Income Tax<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/income-tax-rates\">Check current Income Tax rates &amp; Personal Allowances HERE<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p> EXAMPLE: In 2024, that&#8217;s <strong>20%<\/strong> on everything you earn from \u00a312,570 &#8211; \u00a350,270<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">National Insurance (Class 2 &amp; Class 4)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For all self-employed profits of \u00a312,570 or more a year, you will <strong>also<\/strong> have to pay <strong>Class 2 National Insurance<\/strong> (in 2024, that\u2019s a flat-rate of \u00a3179.40 per year), and <strong>Class 4 National Insurance<\/strong> contributions (unless you have already reached State Pension age before the start of the tax year in question) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/self-employed-national-insurance-rates\">Check current National Insurance rates HERE<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>EXAMPLE: In 2024, that\u2019s <strong>\u00a3179.40, plus 6% <\/strong>on everything you earn from \u00a312,570 &#8211; \u00a350,270<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Important note: <\/strong> If you have self-employed profits of less than \u00a36,725 a year, you may choose to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/voluntary-national-insurance-contributions\">pay voluntary Class 2 National Insurance contributions<\/a> (which you may want to do to retain access to certain benefits &amp; State Pension qualifying years).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have self-employed profits of between \u00a36,725 &#8211; \u00a312,570 a year, you will <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not<\/span> need to pay Class 2 NICs. Your contributions are treated as having been \u2018paid\u2019 to protect your entitlement to State Pension and certain benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hang on&#8230; is a Student Loan a tax?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have a UK government Student Loan, there are a range of annual income thresholds (depending on when the loan was issued \/ which \u201cPlan\u201d you are on) between \u00a321,000 &#8211; \u00a331,395. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/repaying-your-student-loan\/what-you-pay\">Check which Student Loan Plan you are on &amp; current repayment thresholds<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you earn over these amounts, you will need to make student loan repayments on that income at the current rate via HMRC, either on your PAYE monthly pay slip, or via Self Assessment if you are Self-Employed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>EXAMPLE: In 2024, if you have a Plan 1 Loan, that&#8217;s <strong>9%<\/strong> on everything you earn above \u00a324,990<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">OK &#8211; How much do I need to save to pay all this tax?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>How much you&#8217;ll need to save to cover your self-employed tax bill will also depend on how much you earn from different sources of income \/ jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The very easiest way to estimate this is to <strong>save back ~25% of your income each time you get paid for a self-employed gig<\/strong>. Put this money in a high-interest saving account and leave it there until your tax bill is due.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the exact amounts of Income Tax and National Insurance you\u2019ll need to pay are based on how much you earn (above the current tax free Personal Allowance), the mix of income you have from PAYE (employed work) and Self-Employed work, and the amount of Allowable Expenses you have each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you do some employed work (with monthly pay slips)<\/strong> alongside Self-Employment, this is considered PAYE (Pay As You Earn) for tax purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>PAYE income<\/strong> is usually taxed at source (eg in employed work, your tax is usually paid before you get any money in your bank account), and if you have a long-term job with one or more employers they will be attributing all (or part) of your tax-free Personal Allowance to those wages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If 100% of your income comes from Self-Employment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Total PAYE \/ Employed Income<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Self Employed Income (after Expenses)<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>What should I save?<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>None<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Less than \u00a36,725 <\/strong><br>(or the current Class 2 National Insurance threshold)<\/td><td><strong>You don\u2019t need to save your Self Employed profits <\/strong>to pay Income Tax&nbsp;or Class 4 National Insurance, but you might consider saving \u00a3179.40 to pay Voluntary Class 2 National Insurance.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>None<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Between \u00a36,725 &#8211;
